Tilak Varma's journey
Who made Tilak Varma?
📍 Hyderabad, Telangana, India
Tilak Varma made 51* off 26 balls on 24 Oct 2026 as India chased 181 from 70 for 5 and beat New Zealand by 4 wickets in Christchurch (ESPNcricinfo). His father Namboori Nagaraju is an electrician; Tilak says the family struggled to pay off loans, yet his father took loans to buy him bats. Coach Salam Bayash spotted him at 11, took no fees and rode him about 40 km to the Legala academy (Wisden, The Quint). Mumbai Indians bought him for ₹1.7 crore in 2022. After that season he got rhabdomyolysis; he says his gloves had to be cut off and his mother fed him by hand for a month (Breakfast with Champions, The Week, Oct 2025). In 2026 he came back from surgery to win the T20 World Cup and Asian Games gold, and became India's T20I vice-captain. We hand-sorted 34 YouTube comments that clearly credited someone for his rise.
