Festival airfares 2026

Why are Indians paying international fares for domestic flights? What's the fix?

📍 India

Diwali and Chhath 2026: one-way tickets home cost more than a flight abroad. Mumbai to Patna touched about ₹25,000 (Aaj Tak, Oct 2026). Delhi to Ranchi was shown at ₹18,334 while Delhi to Bangkok was ₹13,399 (one traveller's screenshot, Curly Tales, 9 Oct 2026). In a LocalCircles survey of about 20,000 flyers (ThePrint, 16 Oct 2026), 54% said they pay over 50% more than in 2025. Trains to Bihar show waiting lists and "Regret". The civil aviation minister said there will be no fare cap this festive season; the Centre told the Supreme Court that airfare rules are final, and the next hearing is on 16 Nov 2026. IndiGo and Air India together hold about 90% of the domestic market (H1 2026).
